Understanding the Gap between Policy and Practice: Focus Group Data
Description
This study uses a community-based qualitative research approach and a critical policy analysis framework to examine how a postdoctoral health benefits policy is interpreted, implemented, and experienced at a private research-intensive university. Data were collected through role specific focus groups with 20 participants, including postdoctoral researchers, faculty advisors, and administrative staff, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Themes coded for in the study are defined. This study was determined by Washington University Human Research Protection Office to be a Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement study that is not subject to IRB oversight.

Steps to reproduce
The data was collected from three focus group at the institution. Each focus group was made up of either department administrators, faculty supervisors, or postdoctoral appointees only. We asked the groups the set of questions listed in OPA_FocusGroup_Template.pdf We provided the groups with a printed version of the WashU Postdoc Health Benefits Costs.pdf Detailed notes were taken by the research team during the focus groups and then collated and compared across the team following each focus group. We then coded each statement from the focus group based on the themes of awareness, implementation, impact, limitation, and recommendation. Statements could receive multiple theme codes. Formatting and coding key is provided for the data as below. Group- describes which focus group the data comes from (ADMN, FA, or PD) Participant- describes participant ID within a group Transcription- the content of what was said by an individual during the focus group, collated from the notes of the research team. Awareness- this column indicates whether the transcription was coded as "Awareness" Implementation- this column indicates whether the transcription was coded as "Implementation" Impact- this column indicates whether the transcription was coded as "Impact" Limitation- this column indicates whether the transcription was coded as "Limitation" Recommendations- this column indicates whether the transcription was coded as "Recommendation"
